Weathering the Storm in Safe Harbor

We're strong and secure.

Over our 50-year history, we’ve encountered many challenges including economic downturns, hurricanes, Y2K and countless changes in the interest rate environment. Throughout that time, some things have remained constant:

  • American Bank is strong.
  • It is well-capitalized and has ample liquidity. See our financial Statement of Condition.
  • It is highly regulated and examined by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on a regular basis.
  • Our loan portfolios are conservative and strong.
  • The bank’s management team is highly experienced (they’ve learned from the challenges).
  • We’re a community bank. Our shareholders and directors live and work in the communities we serve.
  • Your deposits are secure. Not only because of the strength of American Bank, but because the FDIC fully insures your funds up to $250,000 per depositor.1

What is FDIC Insurance?

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insures deposits and protects depositors’ funds in banks and savings associations. FDIC deposit insurance covers each depositor, dollar-for-dollar, up to the insurance limit, including principal and any interest that has accrued. You can recognize an FDIC-insured financial institution by the official FDIC sign at the teller windows. Since 1933, no depositor has ever lost a penny of FDIC-insured funds.

How to Determine FDIC Insurance Coverage on Your Accounts

The basic coverage (up to $250,000 per depositor) can be expanded, depending on how the accounts’ ownership is arranged, allowing you to keep more than $250,000 at American Bank.1 If you have questions about whether your deposits are fully covered, our Client Services representatives and Personal Bankers can help. Just give them a call.

The FDIC is the best source for tools to determine your coverage. They have an online Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator located on their website at

Additional Ways to Insure Funds

Through the Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service (CDARS), we can help you arrange coverage above the FDIC insurance limitations if you have funds elsewhere you are looking to arrange coverage for, saving you the time, energy and stress of trying to place funds yourself.  Contact any of our Personal Bankers for more information.

Access to Your Money

Branch Changes

To help with social distancing efforts, branches with Motor Banks are now delivering most banking services through those facilities. Appointments for lobby services are available for services that cannot be handled at the Motor Bank; call your branch in advance to arrange a time. Branches without Motor Banks (San Antonio Concord Plaza and Corpus Christi One Shoreline Plaza) are limiting the number of clients in their lobbies at one time.
